Science Department

Science Department has been operating at the Carolina Medical Center since 2016, headed by Dr. Urszula Zdanowicz. The Department of Science is a research and development unit that supports doctors, diagnosticians and physiotherapists in their scientific development.

Scientific Briefings

On the initiative of the Science Department, every two weeks on Thursdays, Scientific Briefings are held during which doctors, physiotherapists and students belonging to the Science Club operating at our clinic discuss various topics related to orthopedics, surgery, rehabilitation and sports medicine. Not only specialists from the Carolina Medical Center are invited to give lectures, but also guests eminent in their fields. We were visited by dr hab. n. med. prof. UM Marcin Domżalski, president of the Polish Arthroscopic Society (PTA); prof. Mario Igor Rossello, the world-famous hand surgeon who treated Robert Kubica after the accident in 2011, and prof. Stephen Badylak, director of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

Training and internships abroad

Science Department, apart from the Scientific Briefings, also organizes internal training for our specialists , including on writing scientific articles. It also organizes trips to internships abroad. For example, Mateusz Janik, M.D., participated in a research internship under the supervision of prof. Nasef in Cairo, one of the most respected and recognized surgeons in the Middle East. Maciej Pasieczny, M.D., completed an internship at the Sports Medicine Unit, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University in Istanbul, Turkey, where he had the opportunity to operate with world-famous musculoskeletal surgeons (including prof. Mustafa Karahan, prof. Baris Kocaoglu, prof. Kerem Bilsel, prof. Cengis Cabukoglu) and Tomasz Szymański, M.D., was on a research internship at one of the best orthopedic clinics in Switzerland – the Merian Iselin Klinik in Basel, where under the supervision of prof. Robert Kilger’s he expanded his knowledge related to knee, ankle and foot surgery. Additionally, Bartosz Dominik, M.D., and Patryk Ulicki, M.D., earned a scholarship at Sports and Joint Surgery Innsbruck (Sports Trauma and Degenerative Joint Disease fellowship) and completed a six-month clinical and scientific internship at the Gelenkpunkt Clinic in Austria. Under the supervision of prof. Fink, Dr. Hoser, Dr. Gloller, prof. Braun and Dr. Abermann, they were trained in reconstructive surgery of the knee, hip, elbow and shoulder.

Scientific congresses

One of the tasks of the Science Department is to coordinate the participation of our specialists in prestigious scientific conferences and symposia. We are regular participants and lecturers at all scientific events organized in Poland devoted to orthopedics, rehabilitation and sports medicine. We also participate in the largest scientific conferences organized around the world, the cost of which is covered by the budget of the Science Department of the Carolina Medical Center.

The Science Department provides specialists from our clinic with access to the best international publications In our clinic, we have a well-equipped library with the latest issues of scientific journals and international books. From the funds of the Department of Science, we financed a one-year subscription and online access to one of the most influential orthopedic scientific journals in the world, the American Journal of Sports Medicine..

Clinical trials and research projects

The Science Department helps doctors, diagnosticians and physiotherapists in clinical trials and research projects. Many of them are conducted in cooperation with the largest research centers in Poland and in the world including with the Medical University of Warsaw, the Warsaw University of Technology, the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, the Department of Regenerative Medicine at the Oncology Center, the Medical Education Center, Pittsburgh University, the Imperial Collage of London, Harvard Medical School, and in cooperation with the largest scientific societies – the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine, as well as the Polish Arthroscopic Society.

• “A polygon-shaped complex appearance of medial patellofemoral ligament with dynamic functional insertion based on an outside-in and inside-out dissection technique” Yunshen, Ch. Shiyi, K. We educate generations of future doctors

From the beginning, the goal of the Carolina Medical Center was to educate future generations of doctors and physiotherapists. Currently, we are the leading orthopedic center in Poland with over 20 years of experience, in which we conduct specialization training and internships in orthopedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system and in physiotherapy. Our specialists share their knowledge and experience by participating as speakers in lectures organized by the largest research centers in Poland and in the world. They also act as Scientific Directors in practical (cadaver) courses, sharing their skills and practical knowledge acquired while working in the operating theater.

We are the first private medical facility in Poland, which on July 26, 2002 received the accreditation of the Ministry of Health to conduct specialization training and internships in orthopedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system.

Student scientific club at the Carolina Medical Center

The Student Scientific Club at the Carolina Medical Center (SKN) brings together future doctors interested in orthopedics and sports medicine, as well as physiotherapists. The club was established in 2005. Three years later it was registered as one of the Student Scientific Society clubs of the Medical University of Warsaw. Every two weeks there are meetings for which students prepare presentations and share their knowledge. In addition to theoretical meetings, members of the club have the opportunity to train and observe the work of doctors in their offices and in the operating theater. There are also practical classes – plastering workshops, as well as suturing and kinesiotaping courses.

The most active students in a given academic year have the opportunity to participate in a science camp. During the trip, students undergo a two-week internship in orthopedics and traumatology in a selected hospital, gaining valuable experience. It is also a great opportunity to see new places and for team building. The club’s great success was its significant contribution to the establishment of the National Students Society of Orthopedics. It is a pioneering project aimed at bringing together students from all over Poland interested in the subject of orthopedics.

So far, the National Students Society of Orthopedics has received the support of the Polish Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology and the Polish Arthroscopic Society, which allowed its members to participate in all conferences, workshops and events on special terms.

Medical Education Center

Carolina Medical Center cooperates with the LUX MED Group Medical Education Center, providing ideal conditions for training medical staff from Poland and abroad. The Medical Education Center specializes in organizing practical courses and scientific seminars. The main recipients of the educational offer are surgeons, scientists working in the field of medicine, and physiotherapists.

The Medical Education Center has one of the few laboratories in Poland for exercises using cadavers, simulating the conditions in an operating room. The Center works with staff with over 10 years of experience in conducting practical (cadaver) courses, including for future and current orthopedists and physiotherapists. Moreover, it organizes numerous scientific seminars. The discussed topics include: trauma and reconstructive surgery, regenerative medicine, 3D printing in medicine, rheumatology for orthopedists, children’s knee.

Post-Secondary Sports Medicine College

The Post-Secondary Sports Medicine College prepares students for the profession of masseur technician.

Centrum Edukacyjne Medycyny Sportowej Sp. z o. o. [the Sports Medicine Educational Center] is a company established to run the Post-Secondary Sports Medicine College in Warsaw. It was established in February 2012 by Sport Medica S.A and the Institute of Pathology of the Musculoskeletal System. The college is a non-public school with the rights of a public school. It prepares students for the profession of masseur technician (digital symbol 32540) within a two-year teaching cycle (four semesters). The school conducts education in a full-time and weekend system, and the curriculum includes 120 hours of apprenticeships.

Classes are held at the Carolina Medical Center, and are conducted by qualified staff – employees of renowned scientific and training institutions, examiners of Regional Examination Boards, experienced scientists, educators and specialists (Medical University of Warsaw, National Institute of Hygiene, Carolina Medical Center, and others). The students of the study participate in the most important sports events in Warsaw, supporting the athletes and participants of the events with massage.

The study is entered in the school register of the Warsaw Education Office and has the rights of a public school granted by the decision of the President of Warsaw. It has a positive opinion of the Ministry of Health and the Board of Education in Warsaw, which supervises the school. The school implements the curriculum of the Ministry of National Education.

Graduates of the school receive a leaving certificate and write the State Vocational Exam. Successful passing of the exam results in obtaining a Vocational Diploma and an English-language Europass supplement, recognized in EU countries (currently the school has a 100% pass rate for the State exam).

Postgraduate Education Medical Center

The Carolina Medical Center conducts specialization courses endorsed by the Postgraduate Education Medical Center. The courses are intended for doctors who specialize in orthopedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system.
